Greetings from the East,
It's been an amazing six months filled with numerous achievements and advancements, all contributing to the vibrant activity of our lodge. I am extremely grateful to our dedicated Officers who generously gave their time and effort to revitalize our lodge.
In July, we organized a fantastic bowling event at Corbin Bowl, and I'm delighted to say that we had a great turnout. Our Hollywood Chapter of DeMolay and Job’s Daughters Bethel 289 Tarzana showed tremendous support, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to Ever, Sean, Michael, and Ava for their participation. While some new prospects outperformed us in bowling skills, we had the opportunity to share our fraternity's values and ideals with them and handed out a few applications to potential future brothers.
Our experience at the Masonic Service Bureau’s Grandmaster breakfast was truly memorable. The message delivered by the Grandmaster of Masons in California, The Most Worshipful Randall Brill, about "Accepting of All" and "Harmony and Diversity" struck a chord with everyone present. We also had a strong representation from members of Hollywood 355 at Worshipful Burt Haaz’s memorial service, which was a heartfelt tribute.
As we continue to forge ahead with great enthusiasm, I am thrilled to share that we have exciting plans for the upcoming months. In August, we will be hosting a Golden Veterans Award ceremony, organizing a trip to Catalina Island, and conducting a 3rd degree initiation. Moreover, in mid-September, we have a special event, "Masons for Mitts," scheduled at Dodger Stadium.
For more information on these events and to stay updated on our future activities, please visit our website's calendar at www.hollywoodmasons.org.
Once again, thank you all for your unwavering support, and together, let's keep the momentum going as we embrace the future with optimism and brotherly love.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Worshipful Master

What is a Lewis in Freemasonry
What is a Lewis ?
Stonemasonry
In stonemasonry, the Lewis is an iron cramp (or clamp) that is forced into a cavity of a stone to enable the lifting or lowering of that stone. A shackle is attached, and the block is hoisted by hook, rope and pulley. By this means, the block is gripped securely. Once set in its place in the structure, the lewis is removed leaving the upper surface smooth with no clamp or chains on the outside to interfere with the laying of the next course. Our ancient operative brethren used this tool as early as the Roman era. Stones with the mortised cavity for the insertion of a lewis have been found in Hadrian’s Wall (built c. 121-127 CE). Archaeologists have found further evidence of its use by the Saxons in England in buildings constructed in the 7th century.
Symbol
Although it is not referred to as working tool used in Masonic ritual it can be seen as a symbol of strength, which a son is to his father. Under some Masonic Constitutions "lewises" are granted privileges such as in Scotland where the son of a Master Mason can be initiated at the age of eighteen rather than twenty-one. In England the privilege extended to a "lewis", is that he takes precedence if he is one of two candidates at initiation.
History
The Prince of Wales, Frederick Louis (sometimes written as Lewis), had been made a Freemason in the previous year on 5 November 1737. His son, who would reign as King George III, was born on 4 June 1738 amid general rejoicing. Three of his other sons, The Dukes of York, Gloucester, and Cumberland would follow their father into freemasonry. Masonic historians conclude that the term came into use in the 18th century. The Lecture in the Second Degree published by William Preston in the 1780s contains a lengthy discourse on the Lewis.
Currently
In our context, a Lewis refers to the son of a Mason who follows in his father's footsteps to become a Mason, particularly within the same lodge.
Are you considered a Lewis? Will your son or grandson carry on the tradition and become a Lewis as well?

Dear Members and Friends of Hollywood Lodge #355 F&AM,
The first week of July we had our Annual Grand Bethel in Ontario. During Grand Bethel some of our girls competed in the Ritual and Music Competitions, as well as Arts & Crafts. They did very well and won awards. Shayne was awarded First Place for her Arts & Crafts project. Shayne also competed in the Ritual Competition where she was awarded Second Place for reciting the Ritual Story. Emma competed in the Music Competition, and she was awarded Second Place for singing and playing the guitar.
On Saturday evening after the installation of the new Grand Bethel Officers, we went to Fiesta Village Family Fun Center where we were able to ride go-carts, play video games, roller skate, ride other fun rides, play laser tag, and play mini golf. Everyone had a fun time at Grand Bethel.
During the rest of August, we go dark and do not have meetings, there for our next meeting will be in September.
We at Bethel 289 Tarzana wish everyone to continue to be Healthy and Safe. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays every month at 7 p.m.
